Welcome. I am João Vieira (JV).

I am a Staff Software Engineer based in Vancouver, BC, and an immigrant from Brazil. I have been working in software for 13+ years, but I still see myself as a student.

This blog is where I write about things I am learning, testing, and trying to understand better. Some posts are technical, some are personal, and some are just me documenting a process so I do not forget it later.

If you are new here, a good place to start is Categories.

Software Engineering

Most of my day job writing appears here. I share what I learn while building and running systems in production: architecture decisions, observability, testing, delivery practices, and the mistakes that taught me the most.

I try to keep these posts practical. If something worked for me, I explain why. If it failed, I explain that too.

Learning from Books

I read a lot of non-fiction, and I write book notes to remember what mattered. I have read more than 90 books so far, and writing about them helps me turn ideas into action.

These are not formal summaries. They are my personal takeaways and the parts that actually changed how I think or work.

Travel & Adventures

My wife and I love to travel, especially places with nature and wildlife. I write about the planning, the tradeoffs, what surprised us, and what I would do differently next time.

I also share a lot of photos because it helps me tell the story better.

Immigration

Immigration was one of the biggest changes in my life. I share parts of my Canadian immigration journey and practical notes that can help others going through similar decisions.

Personal Development

I care a lot about health, habits, and sustainable growth. You will find posts about fitness, productivity, podcasts, and routines I use to stay consistent.

Some experiments work, some do not. I usually write both.

Finance & Investing

I have tracked my expenses since I was 18 and started investing in 2015. Over the years, I moved from stock picking to a simpler, long-term index strategy.

I do not post financial advice. I mostly share what has worked for me and why I prefer simple systems.

Leadership & Work

I write occasionally about leadership, communication, mentoring, and the reality of growing your career while helping other people grow with you.

Hobbies

Outside work, I spend time on photography, stargazing, gardening, and other hobbies that keep me curious.

Why keep a blog?

This blog is mainly for me.

Writing helps me organize ideas and test my understanding. When I try to explain something clearly, I can quickly see what I do not fully understand yet.

I am not trying to be perfect here. I am trying to be consistent and useful.

If any post helps you, even better.

Cheers.
