British Columbia in Canada is an amazing place with beautiful nature and plenty of wildlife. From humpback whales in the blue ocean to the bears in the green trees to the eagles in the white mountains, this province has it all.
This page brings two of the things that I love in one place: nature and photography. Here I will try to collect images taken by me of some of the beautiful wildlife we have around British Columbia.
I’m probably not going to be able to document all the beautiful wildlife we have here, but I will try my best in my free time as my hobby.
Here they are:
Mammals
Black bear
We saw a bunch of them in the last few years. Some in Whistler, a few around the Vancouver area. The most abundant place we saw them was in Minnekhada Regional Park. On the same day, we saw 3 mothers with 2 cubs each. The photo below is from Minnekhada Regional Park at the beginning of spring.

Humpback whale
This humpback whale was a real treat for us. We took a day trip to Bowen Island in early May to enjoy a sunny day on the ferry and on the island. After a short walk on the island, we got to a viewpoint and we could hear the blows and there was this whale feeding around the island. We even saw it bubble-net feeding, but this photo is from when it was almost leaving the beach.

Steller sea lion
They are not usually easy to spot, and we never saw many of them, except for a great spot we found on Bowen Island, BC. We took a day trip there to enjoy the summer once and we heard the noise from far away. There were tens of them on a small fishing pier.

Beaver
It took us more than 4 years to see them. We even thought they were just an urban legend. But on a beautiful day while hiking in Minnekhada Regional Park we saw one in the water. The picture wasn’t as good as I expected, but at least we saw one of them.

Coyote
I saw a few coyotes around Central Park, but this one was on a sunny day in Iona Beach Regional Park in Vancouver where we just went for a walk. It was a beautiful place for a walk.

Eastern gray squirrel
These are everywhere, everywhere. Maybe just less everywhere than crows and Canada geese. This specific one was in Central Park, Burnaby, which is a great spot in general.

Reptiles
Western painted turtle
I was surprised to see turtles in the marsh in Minnekhada Regional Park. They are not hard to spot on a sunny day, they are usually just sunbathing on some of the logs in the pond, especially on the left side of the lower pond.

Birds
Bald eagle
They are majestic. They are not that rare to see, but really hard to take pictures of. They are either flying far away or on a branch too far to capture easily. This one was taken around Minnekhada Regional Park while flying.

Great blue heron
Beautiful birds, especially when flying, as they have a really huge wingspan. They are common around the Vancouver area. I saw this one in Minnekhada Regional Park, but I have seen them in Central Park, Iona Beach and everywhere.

Red-breasted sapsucker
This one was hitting the park sign. It was making so much noise that from far away I even thought it was people. It just stayed there looking at me and hitting the sign.

Red-winged blackbird
I guess this one was the only one that I saw. It was just around Iona Beach Regional Park. Nice birds.

Black-capped chickadee
I like their call, it is really easy to identify. This one was taken in Pemberton, but they are everywhere.

Northern shoveler
If it wasn’t for Merlin, I wouldn’t have told this apart from a mallard, but it is a female northern shoveler taken in Minnekhada Regional Park in October.

Mallard
It is really interesting that the male and female are so different, and in this picture we have both. They are really common, and Central Park is my favorite spot to see them. But these ones are from Minnekhada Regional Park.

Canada goose
Beautiful and super common everywhere. You can really watch them through their whole lifecycle. It is really nice to see the goslings at the beginning of spring. Their young ones are not so pretty, but the really young are nice. This family was photographed on Bowen Island.
